Bishop Hill Illinois, like many towns, lost a significant number of its male population to the Civil War. In fact, the town nearly died, with the effects of the war and loss of most of its capital in a fire just before the war. It was originally formed as a commune, settled by Erik Jansson and several Swedish followers. The town grew to more than 1000 people but declined to just over 100.
