Dongchuan District, near Kunming in Yunan Province, includes the Wumeng Mountains and is rich in iron and copper and making the soil red. This particular spot is about 180 kilometers from Kunming and was only visible for a few minutes through the clouds covering the tops of the mountains. The farm terraces of yellow buckwheat, corn, and rice have created a colorful "red earth" landscape that has was kept secret by Chinese photographers and artists for years.
